You need to explore the other world in the portal. It takes awhile to destroy the wraith. When you do, find the sage. This is very important to get the focus stone and many other things. To get more gold go to the Plaza and try to go everywhere. When you find the one who will buy your stuff, be very persistant on selling anything you can. There is something that she will refuse to buy that you must sell. You must then find a person that will help you in the town.
