Have you tried picking up that big heavy object that the sage said will be light as a feather? If you do that and go back to Larosis you will be able to take "revenge" on that horrible gate of despair. then talk to Darius again, see if you can convince him to take you with what you already have.
It seems that you need to play around with exiting and entering the city again after that to get the focus stone. It sort of falls on you!!

I don't know if that is too much or too little information. I don't want to say too much!
