Just for clarity, note that you are actually on level 8, not level 3, since the levels count backwards from 10 to 1.
Do you have a location spell going? If not, it's critical to figure out how to do that. You can do that without leaving the immediate area, but you may need to restart the level in order to have battles available to you.
When you've got a location spell going, watch the coordinates as you move around. Do the coordinates jump around when you step on certain key squares? Make a note of them and avoid stepping on those spots again.
