Don't try to fight that party too much. Once you get past that first guard, just get the next guys to chase you. Meet them every 10 steps or so, but just run from them. Don't fight yet. You'll find that the corridor is specially designed for that situation, and you should eventually find a slightly more open area that can provide you with help.

This information is also in the hints section for the game.

As for the potion, don't worry too much about that. You might find some other helpful things before long.
