TOA-Mapping problems w/RAT

Hoping for some general instructions on mapping for a lady without much skill in that type of work & NO sense of direction. :^) Muddled thru several games without mapping out anything, but can't do a darn thing with the rat catching in this one without one. Please help me. I've been chasing him forever right into a new rat hole and can't catch him. Here's my inventory:
