We went under the James River. The bay bridge/tunnel goes over to the Eastern Shore and I've never been over there. When I was a kid, (1948) I visited relatives who lived in Norfork on the Elizabeth River. It's an estuary located south and east of the James, and it was about a mile wide near there house.

I've been through a lot of those below water tunnels in Detroit, Boston, and Mobile, as well as Norfork. I'm never really very comfortable down there, but it doesn't take long to get out.

We went through tunnels in the mountains of West Virginia and North Carolina, but that doesn't seem to bother me with no water over head.

Passing under the James River always reminds me that my ancestors sailed up that river and settled in Charles City County in the late 1600's. They wouldn't believe what the area looks like today!
