This is the only definition that ever made sense for me: Love is that state of being where another person's happiness is essential for your own. I know that I can't be happy without knowing that Amy is, too. Affection is simply enjoying the presence of someone, or something.

I know that the behaviour many people associate with love is incompatible with that definition. One example is possessiveness; if someone that you love would be happier with someone else, how can you stop them from leaving, just for your own happiness?

I don't know if people deliberately lie when they say "I love you" (though some certainly do), but it's probably more common for people to mistake lust or affection for love. If you've never been in love, it seems to be an easy mistake to make.
