Fantasy Quest 1

I'm stuck. I've found the tower, and the castle. Can't get into the tower and can't get past the guard at the castle. I can't get into the fortress, either! People are talking about a scroll .... any hints on where I find that? I have:

sack, carrot, rope, hook, branch, silver and gold keys, sword, shovel, hammer, nails, bow, arrow, fishing pole, club, ticket, pass ring, sunstone, leaves.
