There are often arguments about so-called sexual tension when discussing such things, but I for one am confused by them.

Should a gay man be allowed in an all-girl school? He certainly wouldn't be losing concentration on his studies. But that might make some girls nervous, simply because of the presence of a guy even if they can be pretty sure he has no interest in them. So what about lesbians? Should they be banned from all-girl schools for sexual tension reasons? If the stats are to be believed, one in ten of the student will swing the other way. Even more may experiment.

Excluding people from places on the basis of gender is basically down to one thing: Pre-emptive protection. The students turned away are done so because they may end up getting distracted or causing a distraction. It's a blanket cover, and the evidence seems to suggest that it works. The problem is that nothing can be 100% effective, as any group of students are going to distract each other in some way.

It's a thorny issue, and I typoed that without the t first. There is no real reason to have single-sex schools, any more than there is to have single-race (to remove possible racial tension) or single-nationality, or anything else of that sort. Tensions, discriminations, and general interplay between the students should be handled on a person-by-person basis.
