looking forward at history

The President has four years to present historians with the kind of image that he would like to see in the history books. He would not want historians to paint him the way his political opponents did during the campaign. Being politicians, they were not always fair to each other, but both tried for a thread of truth in what they said.

The President will have to wage peace to make up for waging war. He will have to improve the economy, avoid more wars and terrorism, protect the environment, and restore unity at home and with other countries.

Otherwise, the historians will hang him out to dry. Historians can be a ruthless lot, but they look at results. They lose their credibility if they record anything but the truth. Based on his first term, the President would not look good in the history books. Maybe that's why he was so determined to be elected.

The 2000 election made Florida the laughing stock of the nation. I hope the 2004 election won't make the United States the laughing stock of the world. That puts me in the rather weird position of pulling for a man I was recently pulling against.
