I wandered around for a while, left my crate in the shack, saw the horse, attempted to steal the hammer, etc. I read other posts and figured out that I'm supposed to be working at the tavern to earn money but there isn't any option to. Somebody please un-stick me!

when you left the caves you saw a building to the south. now is he time to go visit it. when you go to the bar get a little shove and see what happens. get your crate by all means. you use the crate and rope many times so keep thm with you. to get the hammer you need the crate.
