I just wanted to focus in on this point. Even if you don't manage to get your kids to learn to play the guitar (or sing), playing for them is very valuable. Some of my clearest memories of my childhood are of my dad playing guitar, and all the songs he used to play are some of my favorites now, even though I don't generally like the genres of music he played. Music in one's childhood is a very powerful thing.
