Just down the road about ten miles there is a bridge that was built across the Tennessee river in 1928. It's a six span steel truss bridge and with approaches, I guess it's almost half a mile long. Earlier this week, they opened a new bridge right beside it. The new one is wider, made of concrete, and has no overhead structure.

I haven't driven across it yet but most everyone else in the county has. They say it feels much safer. The old one had only a foot or two clearence between your right fender and the concrete and steel guard rail.

The old bridge was built high enough to allow steam boats to pass underneath, and the new one is the same. There is still a lot of barge traffic on the river.

Soon, the old bridge will come down. There will be a few people who will be sad to see it go, but I'm not one of them.
