That really depends on what you mean by "numbers on the side of them". If what you mean is that you found a "widget +2", that just means it's somehow better than a regular widget. Usually stronger.

You should never leave any areas unexplored in MR. You never know what you'll be missing.

The worst thing that can ever happen is that someone drags your party's carcasses back to Perinn (or somewhere more upscale).

From what I remember, hovering only improves your odds for certain kinds of traps. You found one it doesn't work on. There may be a few more like it.
