Buckler. Having both seems to give you just enough time to get a defensive spell on before the Royal Escorts zap you. I think the buckler's probably the rarest of all the class-specific special items. Or perhaps it just seems that way given the time it took to get one.
I have a theory that the probability of finding the rarer special item for your own character class is lower than that of finding any of the others, but nobody's ever backed me up on that!
