There are two things you can do right now, both in the mines. One's a piece of ore that's a bit difficult to get to -- you need to check around carefully near running water.

The other thing is the most common point for people to get stuck on in this game. There are two different spots where you are speeding along in a mine cart and have to jump off to avoid death. At one of these spots, if you look carefully at the area description, it says that you can still hear the cart rumbling along afterward. Turns out that if you can get to where the cart comes out of that narrow tunnel quickly enough, you can jump back on. This will get you to a whole new area of the mines, and you'll find a few new things to do after that.
