MR:About Teleporters?? (Spoiler?)

Sorry to be asking for yet more help, but these teleporters in the towns confuse me and I can't see what on earth good they are nor how to use them?

If you must always march your group from town to town, and if you cannot teleport to any town where you don't have a character, what use is a 'teleporter'? How do I leave a character in the first place without deleting it entirely? Sounds pretty dumb of me not to be able to reason that one out. Just whenever I enter the labyrinth, all my characters go with me. Can't seem to get any of them to 'stay behind'. Please help!! Thanks, Banan
