Make use of magic gloves and boots as well as certain weapons if you want to make him speedier. Iron makes for a good armour class, sure, but it also slows the character right down.
Also note that wielding a long range weapon such as bow and arrows or crossbow slows your speed down to 1, no matter what magical mystery items you happen to be carrying or equipping.
