Go back to the tower. Try sitting and checking the furniture and you will find yourself in another are. Don't touch the bookcase until you are ready to leave. You will find something to help you with the gaurdian. Don't be in a hrry for the float ring. you don't need it yet. The shopkeeper gave you the hook for the jewel.
