POA - missing something in the mines

I keep reading posts about all the wonderful things I should be able to see and do in the mines (sandstone caverns, sledgehammer, Verna's card, etc) but I can't seem to get anywhere down there. I found and rotated two barriers, and Cortez opened a small passage to the South...but when I go through, I reach another barrier and have to turn back. I'm really stuck. What am I missing?
