Can't heal the tree til you get rid of the vampiress, can't get rid of her til you give away that sap. (As for the clown, that's also a ways off, but if you can't get into the garden, check out the riverbank south of the Indian.)

Giving someone the sap is your first step to getting the components for the cross. You have the branches, but no way to retrieve the item needed to NAIL them together.

Take the bucket back and head west for a bit. There's someone furry, friendly and apparently useless who would love to lap up the contents of your bucket.
