Go down by the river (past the Indian, I believe) and search around in the mud. This will help you enter the garden. (Ooh, and a certain looney tune who's fresh out of ideas will appreciate that note...)
And while you're at it, on the way back from the riverbank, why don't you lead the Indian to some creatures who could heal him? (You don't get any items for it, but the event will trigger something much later on.)
