Thing is, I've been back and forth from the gardens and forest a bunch and have been unable to find another coin (I thought I had already found one in each location). I've already gotten a coin as change and the boat is smashed. Do I, in fact, need another coin, or do I need to do something else?

You missed the coin in the gardens (you did get a jewel there, so maybe that's what you were thinking of).
