First off, you need something else in your bucket. (I don't like spoilers, but it'll save you a LONG trip, so go remedy that.)
Go back to the place you used the goo and "try to find another way up" ONE MORE TIME. This should reveal the back entrance to that pitch-black cavern at the north of the valley.
If that doesn't work: Wait til the giraffe gets bored and moves away so that you can start into the valley without immediately confronting it. (The amount of moves this takes seems to vary.)Then, instead of going further west, go NORTH.
The pitch-black cavern is a bit of a pain, but it's really only six rooms and two exits, and if you keep track of which directions DON'T make you bonk into a wall (which means there's a path that way) you may find that it's a very nice little shortcut in and out of the valley. Get a pen and paper to map it out as you go.
What's the point of all this? If you entered the valley from the east while the giraffe was poking its big nose into that cavern in the north, you'd have just enough time to make a dash for the west side of the valley.
Trust me, once you've figured it out, it's not as complex as it sounds. :)
