White flames in FQ1

How can I get past the white flames into the castle? Looking over the messages here, I see something about giving gold to the soothsayer (I've done that twice and she hasn't told me anything helpful) and something about a pass ring, which I don't have. A hint would be appreciated. I'm carrying:

Sack
Carrot
Rope
Hook
Silver Key
Gold Key
Sword
Shovel
Hammer
Nails
Bow
Arrow
Fishing Pole
Club
Ticket
Sunstone
Leaves
