The rusty gate can only be dealt with when you've given the soothsayer enough gold. Forget about it for now.
To defeat the lion, you must first have done away with the flat cat. Lead it to a previously useless hollow log.
If you have defeated the cat, the rabbit will repay you when you face the lion, but you have to buy him some time to come help you.
