Okay, as for how you get to the caverns: chop through the stalagmites, climb up the pipe and then take the cart back down there again. THIS TIME, you have to go through the caverns (most notably the path you cleared through the stalagmites) and catch the cart again when it comes out of the narrow tunnel. This will allow you to cross the chasm to the south and pull the cart over to the sandstone caverns.
