1) There IS another way in. But to make it work you have to pick up something from the general store and apply it to something rusty inside the fortress.
2) The more gold you give that woman, the closer you are to winning. Yes.
3) South castle and the gardens (assuming you got the gold coin in the gardens) are essentially useless now.
