I don't remember exactly what it was, but anytime you get anything valuable, check at the general store to see if you can buy something with it.
In the case of the bucket, you need to A. check some strange boxes and B. enter a large building. On the way, you will scare someone, kill someone, help someone, fight with someone, and threaten someone... all different people.
If you post your inventory, it would really help us know where you are.
