You pick their sex, race, and class. Then you go off into this labyrinth on a quest to defeat the archmage Murkon and recover this lost diadem that he's stolen. You build your skill level and stats as you go by gaining experience from killing monsters. There are pools, locked doors, traps, treasure chests, chutes, and all that good stuff. > > Murkon's labyrinth consists of 10 levels, each 30*20 squares in size. There are four towns and plenty of monsters and treasures. I played the game from late March to early May this year, beating Murkon with two parties. The best Murkon's Refuge player around here seems to be Commie_Bat, who has beaten Murkon's Refuge four times, if I'm not mistaken.
I wouldn't say I'm the best MR player ever, but I certainly have a valid claim to the title of "most experienced MR player ever". A cursory glance at the Hall of Fame indicates that I have beaten Murkon 6 times, but the first time was the real challenge. The other times were just out of curiosity and an attempt to come up with a way of beating the game that added an artificial level of challenge.
Also, the only reason I seem to have played twice as much MR as the next guy is that I'm apparently less resistant to addiction. I only stopped playing once I had retired 18 characters that I was reluctant to delete, and the game wouldn't let me create more.
