There are three very nice items that you can't equip, if I remember correctly, one of which is a rod that's the rarest item in the game. There are also two really cool swords, and a plurality of once-invokable combat items.
If you really want to discover everything without getting too bored, retire your party and play a challenge game with a brand new party. They'll have the same chance of finding cool stuff as your first party, but at least you'll have something else to do in the meantime.
