Gah. All right, so I don't know the history of my own country. A very short web search later, I found out all about this battle, and now I want to go back and look at the site again. The Rangiriri Pa defenses were designed by Te Wharepu and were the Maginot Line of the war against the British, except that they were actually built in a good strategic location where the British couldn't just go around a different way. ;-)
