I was thinking about this and I found some striking similarities between these two directors. They both began their directorial careers with low-budget horror films that they shot with their own money, on their own time, with the aid of their friends. Both of these films (Evil Dead and Bad Taste respectively) have become cult classics among horror movie fans for their camp value. Both then went on to much greater notariety by being (somewhat improbably in the minds of many) selected to direct film adaptations of possibly the greatest sagas in to niche genres with rabid fanbases. Both achieved success in these projects by balancing the demands to make the films accessible to general audiences with the demand to stay true to detail in order to satisfy the existing fans. Both did the almost unthinkable in the realm of book (or comic book) to film adaptations and remained relatively true to the original story. Also, I think they look kind of alike. Coincidence?
