I think the reason Americans aren't any good at soccer is because we actually try to score. Apparently the way to win a soccer game is to just avoid any pretense of trying to score in the 90 minutes of regulation and just hope your keeper can stop more shots than the other team's during the shoot-out. *yawn*

You forgot the 30 minutes of Golden Goal extra time. At least there, they have a REASON to sit on their hands and play for penalties. When there was no sudden-death, sometimes teams would actually come out and try and nab a quick goal without any fear, because if it backfired and they conceded, there would still be time to try again. It's destroyed the whole concept of extra time - also, refs don't give penalties in extra time, because it's like saying "Here, have a free shot that will win the game." In fact, UEFA (the inter-European governing body) are dropping the Golden Goal from their extra time periods, because it was harming the quality of the matches so much (not to mention Liverpool stealing the UEFA Cup by sitting on their hands during extra time and then Alaves scored an own goal)

I agree with you on this. I find most international football a boring waste of time. It's because it's all people who don't play together trying to play together.

But hey. I am now completely unable to watch almost any football at all, because it just highlights how many light-years better Arsenal were last season. International football is boring. Most club football is boring, as well, compared to Arsenal.

It's like watching a baseball team that's so good, they never drop catches, their double-plays are awesomely fast, their batters are near-perfect and they just rip through everyone. When you watch someone else, all those little mistakes that you aren't used to seeing shine right through and take over your entire perception.
