Retraining & accumulated points

All of my characters have reached the 30 point max in all of their stats. They are all accumulating extra equip stats when they level. When I retrain them will they lose these points or will they be added to the extra distribution points of the race that they were when they started after I retrain them. I checked the instructions page and it was kinda vague on this point.
