Independence? As in independence from Britain? I would imagine that they would either invade directly, or impose boder taxes and trade sanctions that would make an independent Gibraltar completly untenable. It's only really the British military presence (Gibraltar being defined as a military protectorate under the Treaty of Utrecht) that has limited Spain to attempting a diplomatic handover.

However, as at least 95% of the Gibraltan population activly want to remain British, this is unlikely to be an issue.
