Do you have the correct Courier / Courier New TrueType (or OpenType) fonts installed on your machine? That should be, being Courier New TT included in any standard installation.

Try to open notepad, Edit->Set Font, select Courier New and try to write something.
If the problem persists also in Notepad, check where are the cour.ttf, courbd.ttf, couri.ttf, courbi.ttf files. If they are missing, reinstall them from a valid W95 source.

Monospaced fonts can be always rendered as Courier.
