A lucky streak

As you have to have noticed, I collect vintage motor scooters, mainly Cushmans, which have not been manufactured since 1965. For years I have dreamed of finding an old Cushman somewhere in a barn. Other collectors tell of such stories, but I have never found a Cushman like that. (One of my Vespas came out of a barn, but that doesn't count. It was a 1974.)

Anyway, I suddenly had a streak of luck. Within the last month, I have found one in a barn in Rutherford County, Tennessee, and another one in a barn in Cannon County. Then last night I got a call from a guy who has one in his barn in Loudon County. I'm going to look at it Saturday. If I buy that one it will be three barn-fresh* scooters in a 30-day period, which has to be some kind of record. That's the kind of thing that makes collectors collect.

*"barn-fresh" is a term used by scooter collectors meaning, as you might guess, a scooter found where it has been sitting for many years. It doesn't really have to be a barn, but it makes a better story. I found my Cushman Eagle in a garage in a subdivision in Louisiana. It had been there 18 years, but somehow a barn on a farm sounds better.
