The ABC of Communism

Interesting title, eh? What I find particularly funny is that this book was actually written, not as a satire or as a comedy book, but by Bukharin, one of the leading Bolshevik theoreticians. Anyone doing Russian history on the period 1905-1925 might recognise that, but if you don't, it doesn't actually matter because the post isn't about communism, or indeed the alphabet.

Erhem. What this post is ACTUALLY about is the amazing selection of names for either a rock group, or one of its albums, simply by looking through any textbook. A couple of minutes combing through my notes on Soviet religion, arts, women and the family brings up such absolute gems of names as Patriarch, Shameful Peace, Limited Toleration, House Arrest, Proletarian Culture, League of the Godless (maybe only metal for that one), Commissariat of Enlightenment, Constructivism, Third International...the list goes on. And that was just from three pages! Oh yes, Freedom of Conscience is a good one too. Anyway, the point I was trying to make is that it is unbelievable how many frankly cruddy names are kicking around because no-one made the effort. Physics textbooks could give you "Higgs Boson and the Charge Carriers", but we're stuck with bands like Stereophonics who named themselves after a brand of speakers.

Sad, isn't it? All this hidden creativity, and nothing happens. Ah well. If I was in charge of the music industry, things would be different. Pigs would be flying, for one thing.
