Are you killing stuff on 8 on your way to the pools? I find that if I kill everything on level 8, it's usually enough for all six of my guys to level up once. Just killing a few monsters should be enough to level up your one character.
If you can't kill stuff on level 8 yet, you're prolly a long long way from making it to Murkon. Good luck finding the Items of Specialness for Knights (you're a Knight, right?), I'm looking for those too. I just found a Sorcerer's Hood, which makes me rather happy.
Just out of curiosity, how is your character currently equipped?
