Each town will pay you half of what they'll sell it back to you for. The deeper the town, the more expensive the Shop, the Inn and the Clinic. Sell at Teralt for maximum return - if you can get there.
Basically, once you get to Teralt there should be precious little you have to buy, which is good cause there's some major sticker shock going on there. That's the place to sell all the extra +2 Items of Specialness you accumulate along the way.
