Murkon's Refuge: What is an "Evolving Figurine"?

While escorting my second party out of Lyesis and into Kaliti, my Troll Sorceror found something called an "Evolving Figurine" along the way. What in the world is this? Or should I just invoke it in combat and see? Should I wait for a really big combat to invoke it?
