In the book, Gandalf does not set off any fireworks when he arrives at Bag End. Later, at the party, at suppertime, different family names were mentioned as to who was in the tent.

"The Sackville-Bagginses were not forgotten. Otho and his wife Lobelia were present."

I figured that since they had to get to the party, they would be in and out of Hobbiton just being nosy. When I watched the movie, the grouchy hobbits WERE the S-B's because everyone was so excited about the party, they would be the only sour-pusses around.
