I never went to mine, and I've never regretted it for an instant. High school social life always struck me as petty and superficial. I never really developed any desire to socialize with anybody in school, except for having the occasional friend, until I got to college, and even then I had to hunt to find social niches that didn't fixate on drinking and partying.

The thing about the senior prom, though, is that it's rooted in traditions that date back to times when senior proms weren't about what they're about today. As such, "senior prom" carries the weight of prestige that seems more outlandish to pass up than the usual kind of high school social event. So that may be why people (of your generation or your parents'? I can't tell) think it odd that you exhibit no interest in it. Even so, you'd think "no, actually I'm not" would only evoke a raised eyebrow and not further protest.
