Assassins are better than knights except for the number of hit points they get. I think it's a good trade.

Assassins don't gain levels any faster than any other class, but the thing is, if you have a brand new assassin travelling with other level 12ish people, you'll be able to fight harder monsters right off the bat, which are worth more XP. So you'll find that your assassin makes up the lost experience very quickly.
