Words that require changing hands while typing them are easier to type than one-handed or mostly one-handed words (try "aggravate" or "monopoly" vs. "enchant"). "Immigrant" goes r-r-r-r-l-l-l-r-l, requiring only three hand changes, while "boatpeople" goes l-r-l-l-r-l-r-r-r-l, requiring seven hand changes. Therefore, "boatpeople" is easier to type. I don't however, think it's easier to say.
