Although I don't think I qualify as an old fogey, and hence may not be qualified to answer your question, I agree with Don Monkey. What I'll add is that many fields outside of engineering will hire engineers because they like their style of thinking. Engineers are taught two extremely valuable skills -- how to make things that fulfill a task and how to problem solve. Both of these are good abilities to have. Old fogeys, correct me if I'm wrong.
