You're right and wrong at the same time.

TMN is, chronologically speaking, the first
book in the series, but when the books were
originally published, it was either the fifth or
the sixth in the series. (I can't remember the
original order of TMN and The Horse and His
Boy.)

Newer editions have reordered the books in
the series to match their chronological order.
When the books were first published,
TLTW&TW was book number one, and it was
still considered book one when I read the
Chronicles as a child.
