I think one of the things that always drew me
to Calvin & Hobbes was the quality of the
comic. Bill Watterson took great pride in his
work, which is one of the reasons he ended
the strip when he did instead of keeping it
going-- he had gone as far as he felt he could
with the strip and didn't want to force it. I for
one am glad that C&H didn't end up like some
of the other comic strips out there that either
keep repeating the same jokes over and over
again, or are just plain stupid.

C&H was always imaginative and funny, but
one of the things that struck me was the
artwork. Watterson was more than a
cartoonist; he was a talented artist and
illustrator who wasn't afraid to push the
envelope. Who can forget the vibrant, colorful
worlds that Calvin entered as Spaceman Spiff,
or the times that Susie forced him to play
House and Doctor?

I was very sad when they ran the last strip and
Calvin & Hobbes sledded off into the sunset,
but I'm also glad that Bill Watterson took pride
in his work and refused to let it become a
commercialized cash cow. Even though a
C&H Saturday morning cartoon would have
been ruling.
