I thought that HAL was an acronym that stood
for whatever it was that made HAL work.
"Heuristic Analytic Logarithms" or something
like that. Of course then you have to wonder
what SAL, HAL's feminine successor in
_2010_ stood for. But maybe they just
invented SAL for the movie; I can't remember if
"she" was in the book or not it's been so long
since I read it.
